winter waterfalls

Living near Toronto means that I’m only a short drive away from the wonderful waterfalls of the surrounding area. Even though the Toronto area has a lot of them around, the ribbon waterfalls are one my favourite types, mostly because they’re usually the tallest ones around! I think is one of my favorites has to be the waterfall at the Devil’s Punch Bowl – yes, that is actually what its called. Hiking up to the Devil’s Punch Bowl in the winter time is quite serene and I love photographing it because the snow really compliments the “ribbon” effect of the waterfall. This really amazing waterfall is more that 35 meters high and has been around since, like, the last ice age. The surrounding gorge is huge compared to the width of the waterfall (obviously) making it look like a giant bowl! The water seems to fall into a bottomless pit which adds to the intrigue. The hike down to the gorge is something I usually save for better weather because the snow and ice can make the hike down tricky. But the panoramic views of the colourful rock definitely make it a worthwhile trek!

Another classic is the Tews Falls! This one’s even taller, coming in at around 40 meters. From what I know, this one isn’t quite as old as the last ice age – but isn’t new something either. This gorge is not as big as the punch bowl but the layered rock in the gorge still makes a great backdrop. And I just really this shot, the sun flare makes the snow and the water ribbons look really cool! As much as I hate winter and the cold, I wouldn’t mind getting out to see these waterfalls again!
